Chapter 1 — What PostHog is, and why you want it

The tool you'll measure with, why measuring matters at all, and what it costs.

In this chapter: the case for measuring, the full PostHog product suite, the US/EU choice, and a realistic read on pricing. By the end you'll know what PostHog is for and have an account on the right cloud.


1.1 Why measure at all

You can run a product on intuition for a while. The problem is that intuition can't tell you where you're losing people. You see the top number — signups, traffic — and the bottom number — revenue, active users — and everything between them is dark.

Measurement turns that dark middle into a sequence of steps you can see through. When 1,000 people land on your site, you want to know how many sign up, how many reach the moment the product becomes useful, and how many are still around next week. Each of those is a place you can lose people, and each is a place you can fix. You cannot fix a leak you cannot see.

That is the entire job of a product analytics tool: make the leaks visible so you can work on the right one. PostHog is the tool this course uses to do it.

The discipline that goes with the tool — what to measure and why — is the AARRR framework, and it gets its own chapter (Chapter 2). This chapter is about the tool.


1.2 What PostHog is in 2026

PostHog calls itself an all-in-one platform for building products. In practice it's a stack of products that all sit on one event pipeline and one model of who your users are. That shared foundation is the point: an error links to the session replay that links to the user's whole analytics history, because it's all the same data.

You don't need all of it. For this course you'll mainly use Product Analytics, Web Analytics, and Session Replay, plus Data Pipelines later for sending conversions to ad platforms. Here's the whole suite so you know what's there:

  • Product Analytics — event-based analysis: trends, funnels, retention, paths, stickiness, lifecycle, and raw SQL. Includes autocapture (it records clicks and pageviews with no code). This is the core of the course.
  • Web Analytics — a Google-Analytics-style dashboard (visitors, sessions, bounce rate, channels, geography) sitting on the same data, with far less setup. Good for the marketing-site view.
  • Session Replay — watch real user sessions play back, with console logs and network requests captured. This is how you find the why behind a drop-off.
  • Feature Flags — turn features on/off for a percentage of users or a targeted cohort, without deploying.
  • Experiments (A/B testing) — built on feature flags; measures whether a change actually moved a metric, with statistical significance.
  • Surveys — in-app surveys (NPS, feedback) targeted at specific users.
  • Error Tracking — captures exceptions, groups them into issues, and links each one to the session where it happened.
  • LLM Analytics — PostHog's headline 2026 product: traces of individual LLM calls (tokens, latency, cost), per-user cost attribution, and evals. Relevant if you ship AI features.
  • Data Warehouse — connect external sources (Stripe, HubSpot, your database) and join them to your event data with SQL.
  • Data Pipelines (CDP)Sources (managed ingestion), Destinations (send your events out to Snowflake, ad platforms, Slack, a CRM), and Transformations (clean or enrich events in flight). You'll use a Destination in Chapter 7 to send conversions to Meta.
  • PostHog AI ("Max") — an in-product assistant that answers questions in plain language, writes SQL for you, and builds insights. Useful when you don't yet know the query language.

⚠️ PostHog also ships newer products — Logs, Workflows (its own messaging layer), and Inbox — that are evolving quickly. Treat their exact status and limits as a moving target and check the docs.

One concept worth internalising now

Everything in PostHog hangs off events (a thing that happened) attached to a person (who it happened to). "User signed up", "project created", "page viewed" — each is an event with properties, tied to a person. Get those two things right and every chart in the product just works. Chapter 3 is about getting them right.


1.3 PostHog Workflows vs Hogsend — why this course uses both

PostHog has its own messaging product (PostHog Workflows, formerly the open-source Laudspeaker). It's a no-code canvas for marketers, and it's good at what it does: batch sends and simple drip campaigns targeted on PostHog data.

This course pairs PostHog with Hogsend instead, for the lifecycle layer, because the audience here is people who build. The split is deliberate:

The clean division of labour, which the rest of the course follows:

  • PostHog detects — event collection, identity, cohorts, the analytics you read.
  • Hogsend acts — the journeys that send the emails and Discord/Telegram messages, triggered by events, with the results fired back as events PostHog can measure.

You don't have to choose one forever. The point is that the measurement lives in PostHog and the code-first lifecycle automation lives in Hogsend.


1.4 US cloud or EU cloud — choose before you start

PostHog Cloud runs in two independent regions:

  • US Cloud — data hosted in the US (AWS, Virginia).
  • EU Cloud — data hosted in the EU (AWS, Frankfurt). New EU projects disable IP capture by default for a stronger privacy posture.

You pick one at signup. This matters because data does not move between regions and you cannot merge across them. If most of your users (or your compliance obligations) are in Europe, start on EU Cloud. If you guess wrong, fixing it later means a migration, not a setting.

There's also a self-hosted open-source version. It's a real infrastructure commitment (it runs on ClickHouse) and PostHog actively steers small teams toward Cloud unless data-residency rules force self-hosting. For this course, use Cloud.

Hogsend, by contrast, is built to be self-hosted — your database, your email provider, your deploy. So a common setup is PostHog Cloud for analytics + self-hosted Hogsend for messaging, which keeps the customer data and the sending on your own infrastructure.


1.5 What it costs

PostHog is usage-based and free until you're at real scale. The model:

  • Every product has a monthly free tier that resets each month. You only pay, per-product, once you exceed it.
  • There's no charge for storing historical events — you're billed once when an event is captured, not for keeping it.
  • PostHog says roughly 90% of companies use it for free, and most early-stage startups run free for 6–12 months.

⚠️ Two things to verify rather than take on faith, because they move and they bite: the exact free-tier numbers and per-unit prices (they drift), and Group Analytics — it's reportedly a paid add-on, and enabling it can cause all identified events in the project to bill, not just grouped ones. If you're a B2B product tempted by company-level rollups (Chapter 3), check the current pricing page first.

The practical takeaway: you will not pay anything to follow this course, and you'll have a long runway before cost is a question. When it becomes one, the lever is event volume — which is exactly why Chapter 3 tells you to be deliberate about what you track rather than capturing everything that moves.


1.6 Do this now

  1. Create a PostHog account on the right region for your users (US or EU).
  2. Create one project. (Keep your marketing site and your app in the same project — you want the whole journey, from first visit to paying user, in one place.)
  3. Find your project API key (it starts with phc_). You'll need it in Chapter 3. It's safe to expose publicly — it can write events but cannot read your data.

That's all the setup for now. The next chapter is the part most teams skip and then regret: deciding what to measure before you wire anything up.
