Four small things are worth doing while this chapter is fresh — together they take about ten minutes:

  1. Create a PostHog account on the right region for your users (US or EU) — it's the one decision here that's hard to undo (see the US-or-EU piece).
  2. Create one project, keeping your marketing site and your app in the same one — the payoff is seeing the whole journey, from first visit to paying user, in one place.
  3. Find your project API key (it starts with phc_) — you'll want it in the instrumentation chapter, and it's safe to expose publicly: it can write events but not read your data.
  4. If you evaluated alternatives, consider writing one line on why you chose PostHog (or didn't). A growth team can always answer "why this tool" — and the note earns its keep when someone asks in six months.

That's all the setup for now. The next chapter is the part most teams skip and later wish they hadn't: deciding what to measure before wiring anything up.
